The Imperial Bells of China: Chimes in Concert performs the immemorial music of Hubei and China by combining dozens of ancient musical instruments such as the chime bell, stone-chime, Jian-drum and panpipe with ethnic orchestral music.
The chime of bells is an ancient percussion instrument unique to China. It was mostly used in royal court performances in ancient times on the occasion of battles, sacrifices or the presence of officials at the royal court. The performance is spectacular and magnificent. As a symbol of Jingchu culture and the “Music of the Emperor”, the chime of bells, which originated in the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period, has a range of five and a half octaves and the whole of twelve semitones, so it can provide transition and modulation flexibly and play melodies together with various musical instruments. As a musical instrument, it is deemed as a centralized manifestation of advanced culture and technologies of China over 2400 years ago.
It includes 8 movements, i.e. Spring Blossoms, Black Bird, Grand Melody of the Chime of Bells, Jingchu Folk Melody, Happy Imagination, Ensemble of Eight Ancient Musical Instruments, Melody for Banquet at the Palace of Chu State and Ritual Music Performed by the Chime of Bells. It shows the glorious scene where the chime of bells and drums are played in unison, demonstrates the perseverance of the people of Chu state, and highlights the profound history of the ancient musical instrument of the chime of bells.
