Red House tells the story of Geng Yunhui, a top student of Jianghan Iron and Steel Institute in the mid-1980s, who was given serious attention from the leaders of the institute for inventing the "converter gas automatic ignition device" during his college years. Originally, he had a bright future. In an incident of "plagiarizing papers", he took the blame for his friend who once accidentally hurt others for defending him, and was expelled from school. Since then, his life has fallen into the lowest point. Geng Yunhui's father, Geng Weidong, was held accountable for a major accident in the test of developing new types of steel. Struck by such a radical change, Geng Yunhui decided to pick up his study. Through hard study, he has created remarkable technological innovations and inventions, broken the technological constraints imposed on China by foreign steel industries, realized the reverse transfer of technology for the first time, and made great contributions to the development of Jianghan Iron and Steel Institute.
